In the event of a lawsuit, we must be able to show the maintenance record of each individual piece of equipment that was used on that specific patient. Every type of machine, ie. cautery, tourniquet, scd unit, coblator, infusor , that we have multiples of, have an assigned number (1-7) that is linked to the biotech records. The circulator documents, on the emr, the type of equipment and the assigned number along with the specific settings. It is not difficult.

Subject: [ORNation Listserv] Documenting serial numbers in electronic records
We are in the process of implementing a new documentation system using Meditech ORM. I am interested in knowing what other facilities are documenting in regards to serial numbers of equipment used. We currently document bovie serial numbers and settings but not bovie pad numbers. We document sequential stocking serial numbers. I cannot find specific information on what needs to be documented. Do you document pressure settings on irrigation pumps or gas insufflators? Do you document serial numbers on all electronic equipment used? Any insight into current practices at different facilities would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
